Travel Gadget of the Week: The Search for the Perfect Laptop Bag

Filed under: Airport, Gadgets, Security — mike @ 11:52 am

If you’ve ever cut it close on making a flight, or if you’ve had to change terminals to make and had to go through airport security for a second time in one day while desperately trying to make a connecting flight, you know that the 50 people in front of you with laptops can slow you down. The line just seems to pile up as people (most likely you included) reach into bags to pull out computers, portable DVD players, and any other large electronics they might have.

Well, the TSA feels your pain, and they want to do something about it. Or at least, they want to consider doing something about it. The TSA is in search of the perfect laptop bag; one that will let you run your laptop through while it’s still in its bag.

Keep reading to see exactly what the TSA is planning…

The TSA believes that if they can eliminate the need for passengers to remove laptops, they would reduce stress in security lines, speed up the process, and keep complaints about damaged laptops down. However, as reported by Government Security News, the the elusive laptop bag will have to meet more than a few requirements:

  • The carrying bag cannot exceed any one of the proposed dimensions - 16 inches in height, 24 inches wide and 36 inches long.
  • The materials that make up the bag cannot degrade the quality of the X-ray image of the laptop.
  • No straps, pockets, zippers, handles or closures of the bag can interfere with the image of the laptop.
  • No electronics, chargers, batteries, wires, paper products, pens or other contents of the bag can shield the image of the laptop.

We’ll let you know if and when any decisions are made by the TSA. In the meantime, just get to the airport early if you can, and take your time when dealing with your laptop. A few extra seconds aren’t worth damaging your computer.
