Visit Obamaland II

We already told you about Obamaland I – it’s Hawaii – or more specifically, the parts of Hawaii that used to be the stomping grounds of our 44^th president (who was born in the 50^th state).

Tourism officials there are making a big deal out of Pres. Obama to lure in visitors — and it’s inspired the folks in D.C. to do something similar.

Our nation’s capital – Obamaland II? Why not? In fact, a group called Destination D.C. is already planning a tour that may well include the inaugural route, the White House and more.

We’d prefer to tour the places Pres. Obama has gone to eat – including Ben’s Chili Bowl and the Equinox.

And – Obamaland III? Gotta be Chicago. Stay tuned.

Our new Commander-in-Chief is busy doing many things, including trying to fix this financial mess we’re in – but President Obama may be playing a more direct role in the resurrection of Hawaii’s economy than even he realizes.

Of course, every time the Presidents comes to Honolulu for vacation, he’ll be helping his native state simply because he’ll be accompanied by about a million members of the press corps. I seem to recall that members of the Fourth Estate generally get some sort of expense account…

Forget the Snakes — Now We Gotta Worry About Fireworks on Planes

The FAA is reminding air travelers departing from Hawaiian airports not to pack fireworks in their luggage.

In related news, the FDA is reminding people not to eat hamburger that’s been soaked in turpentine.

According to a recent report, Hawaii “accounted for 17 of the 48 fireworks cases in the Western-Pacific region in 2008″ — cases where fireworks were illegally stowed in luggage.

Here’s the deal: don’t do it. You could be fined or jailed. And you will be forced to wear that “King of the Stupids” crown for life.

United Ruins Vacation and Doesn’t Seem to Care Too Much

Saw this on Consumerist — and they got it from Gerry Braun of the San Diego Union-Tribune — and we bring it to you. Got that?

Anyway, it seems there was going to be this big family reunion in Hawaii. Tickets were purchased months in advance, a beach house was rented, all was in readiness. UNTIL — the day before. United told them the flight was canceled.

Only, it wasn’t. United reportedly, just bumped the family. Eventually they admitted that but never said why (couldn’t be because tickets purchased closer to the trip — more expensive tickets — would be more profitable for the airline, could it?).

The alternatives offered by the airline didn’t work — family members would have missed most of the vacation. Oh, and it wasn’t just a vacation: these people were getting together for a farewell visit to a family member who was dying in Hawaii.

You guessed it. Vacation was a no-go. Family member died. Read all about it.
