This is Great: Holiday 2009 Airfare Shopping Guide!

Yes, Mom, we will be home for the holidays! And you can thank (or blame) Rick Seaney for that.

He’s put together a very cool guide – with charts and everything – to get us home without breaking the bank. I advise one and all to check it out here.

You cook the turkey – and we will set the table.

    Can’t wait.

Yes, Drinking is OK during Mardi Gras – But Not on the Plane

A man aboard a JetBlue flight from New York to New Orleans last February (just a few days before Mardi Gras) – threw a what appeared to be a drunken fit on the plane, and could face some heavy time. Like, 29 years. Plus a million dollar fine.

That’s because the drunk in question – alleged drunk – made the mistake of claiming to be an Air Marshal. That’s called, impersonating a federal officer. He also claimed to be an airline pilot, and who knows what else.

Flight attendants said the man was loud and disruptive, as well as threatening. And he used the “b” word, the one that rhymes with rich.

Nola.com reports that a trial date (in New York) has been set for August.

Two rules to live by: Don’t get drunk on a plane. Don’t show up drunk. Don’t be stupid. Okay, that’s three rules, big deal.

Traveling on St. Patrick’s Day? Check out the Beer Lovers Airport Guide

Poor Danny Boy - he’s a-wearing o’ the green, alright – but he’s stuck at LAX. Even worse, he’s getting thirsty.

Fear not, me boyo – the Los Angeles Times to the rescue with a new airport terminal guide for beer lovers – so you can get an infusion, fast.

For example, head to LAX Terminal 1 for some Gordon Biersch. In Philly, try the Jet Rock Bar and Grill (Concourses B, D and F) with 48 beers on draft. And in Portland, Oregon, they got Organic Tree-Hugger Porter (why am I not surprised?).

It may not be green, but why quibble? Oh, and remember – do not get drunk on a plane. You don’t want to end up like these guys, do you? And that goes double for you, pilots!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, I know it’s tomorrow, but we Irish like to prepare.

The Ideal Valentine Date – oh, my

A travel site called GeckoGo has done a survey about travel and Valentine’s Day and hooking up.

    And here’s what we’ve learned:

    1. The ideal Valentine’s Day date is a weekend getaway
    2. Least popular date is a home-cooked meal
    3. 51% of travelers have “hooked up” while traveling

I can just picture this coming Saturday now – there I’ll be: home, unhooked, and making meatloaf. Hmmm.

Cheap Hotel Deals in New York City for Frisky Valentine’s Day

Filed under: Holiday Travel, Hotels, Romance — anne @ 8:35 pm

The Daily News has put together a handy list of Valentine Weekend package deals at a number of Manhattan hotels, and we liked this one:

“The Marmara Manhattan’s Valentine’s Weekend package includes two nights’ accommodation in a one-bedroom suite, a dozen roses – plus rose petals on the bed – Champagne, chocolate-covered Turkish-delight candies and a Kama Sutra kit for adventurous couples looking to indulge their sensuous side. Priced at $699.”

Turkish-delight? Anyway, yeah, it’s a little expensive, but hey – we’re talking New York City here. If you want rock bottom prices, you may have to share your space with rodents (see “Worst Hotel“).

That said, there are cheaper hotel deals on the list – just click here to see them all.

And if Florida is your idea of romance (sensuous oranges?), click here for great deals.

    We get press releases…

…but we rarely get one like this:

It seems a parking lot at Miami International (“Airport Fast Park”) has hired Yoga instructors to ride the shuttles from the lot to the airport this Thanksgiving, so they can give passengers “yoga tips”.

These are tips about exercises you can do while sitting down. Sounds fair.

Why are they doing this? According to the press release, “to help travelers forget about the anxieties of lost luggage, delayed flights and visiting family and remember to breathe…etc., etc., etc….”

“Remember to breathe” — I will remember that.

Hey, an Upbeat Story – About Holiday Airfare Sales (no arrests, etc.)

If you’re tired of stories about passengers being duct-taped to their seats (and frankly, I don’t see how that’s possible), well – here’s good news – if you like airfare sales.

Actually these are holiday airfare sales – which makes them that much better, cuz now you can bring Grandma to the family celebration.

Oh, what the heck – prices have gotten so cheap, you can bring Grandpa, too.

Don’t believe me? Then read this, by the Master of Airfare – Rick Seaney.

    Happy Holidays.

Okay, at first blush, it sounds crazy. But would I work for a crazy man?

Well, sure. And I have. But Rick Seaney is not a crazy man.

He’s actually got a pretty good idea here – and one that can save you a bundle. It could also save your sanity.

So check out Rick’s idea, that he wrote about for ABC – Thanksgiving in October.

At the very least, you’ll pick up some great “Thanksgiving Travel Tips” - no matter when you gather at Grandma’s house.

    Holy Martha Stewart

This is exactly the kind of thing Martha would pop her glue-gun over, but, don’t laugh…it works.

Here’s the deal: gotta fly in December? And there’s a million things at home to do? Take it with you. Not the turkey you have to cook but, how about Christmas cards?

Bring your cards, stamps, a list of addresses, and do em up while waiting for your flight (or while sitting out delays); I’ve done it. I’ve also brought wrapping paper and tape to do up those presents you have to leave unwrapped for our friends at TSA, but you may not want to go that far. But cards! Lists of things to buy! Do this work.

It passes the time, and gives one that Martha-like feeling of accomplishment. Enough said.

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Time to feast on the ceremonial bird and drift off to sleep in the middle of the day. Ahhh, the holiday season.

If you’re traveling over the next few days, it could be a little crazy out there. So be careful and don’t let the security lines get you down.

    Have a great holiday!
