Flight Attendants Accused of Stealing $11K from Passenger

A passenger on a domestic Vietnam Airlines flight said he had $11,192 in his carryon, which he stowed in an overhead bin. Big mistake – I’d put it on my person or cradle that bag in my arms.

Sure enough, when the plane landed in Dong Hoi, he looked for the money, but it had disappeared.

Happy ending, though – flight attendants searched for the money as the plane continued onto another destination, and found it stashed under a seat (not the one the guy had been sitting in). The money was returned in full to its rightful owner.

Three flight attendants – presumably not the ones that discovered the hidden cash – have since been suspended, and an investigation is continuing.

True, airline fees have gone up and nobody’s giving away those cans of Pringles, but still –$11 thousand dollars?? You were kind of asking for it, buddy…

    Rental Cars Still Expensive

You can find cheap flights, cheap hotel deals, heck even cheap ski deals – but good luck with the rental cars.

The problem, says Jaunted, is that the rent-a-car companies can easily trim their inventory, and that means they can keep prices high.

So nose around for deals – or look into public transit. Or better yet, win the lottery and hire a car-and-driver. Am I right, people?

Clown Goes in Outer Space – Not Letterman

Maybe you saw this: Guy Laliberte, the rich fellow who founded (and owns most of) Cirque de Soleil, went into space to Wednesday aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule.

Cost of his ticket: $35 million.

Fortunately for Mr. Laliberte, he is worth about $2.5 billion. Boy, those flexible folks who make the cirque soar can really pull it in, can’t they?

    Now, where’s my check book?

Thousands Die in Russia – Victims Were Fish

Fish, fowl or fun-loving humans, we are all Somebody’s creatures – so the death of 4,000 tropical fish is not to be taken lightly (especially since they were worth about half a million dollars).

Cause of death: unclear. But the 15 hours it took to clear customs in brutal summer heat at the Black Sea resort of Sochi ought to tell you something, I suppose.

The picturesque piscinies (what — you never made up a word?) were heading toward Sochi Discovery World — Russia’s largest oceanarium – when tragedy struck. And it was a tragedy to the oceanarium’s director who called it an “atrocity unseen anywhere else in the world.”

Think I’ll beg to differ on that one…

Doctor Helps Patient on Air Canada Flight, Gets Paid for it

A patient on board an Air Canada flight from Montreal to Park became ill. Dr. Henry Coopersmith offered to help, but was told another doctor had the matter in hand. Coopersmith goes to sleep.

Then a flight attendant wakes him up, saying she didn’t trust the other doctor, and wants Dr. Coopersmith to take over. He does, and gets the passenger settled down. Coopersmith goes to sleep again.

The flight attendant wakes him up again, saying he has to fill out this form and that form, and with a sigh, he begins this chore. Coopersmith cannot get back to sleep.

Since nap time was a total loss, Dr. C decides to ask Air Canada two free transatlantic tickets in executive class. I don’t know if Air Canada laughed in his face, but they countered with frequent flier miles – 10,000 of them. So he took the matter to small claims court – and won a $1,000 judgment (less than a third of what he asked for). The judge noted that another doctor was already working on the patient, and hadn’t asked for Coopersmith’s help – so he deserved something.

The incident, by the way, happened in 2006. The good doctor was not about to let this one go, was he?

Postscript: The doctor says he’s going to donate the grand to charity.
